This article is about the efforts that the LGBT community in Turkey are making in order to reach a state of equality in their country. They were previously promised legal protection from discrimination back in 2002, but that hasn't come. The community is still parading the streets in protest of the harsh treatment that they suffer on a day to day basis. They often get fined by the police, due to their sexual preferences and way of life. They are still fighting to this day for long standing equality, and wished to be seen as equals among their peers.
I am surprised at how major a topic this is in Turkey, not only in the United States. All over the world, people are becoming more accepting of the LGBT community, but there still exists a large majority that greatly despises what they stand for. Everyday, people join together and fight for what they believe in, and that's what promotes constant evolution of ideologies and beliefs that exist in the world. Their endless dedication to equality, until it is granted, amazes me, because of how hard they work for something that may seem so minuscule in light of other conflicts, such as wars, that exist in the world.
The article greatly ties into the idea of comparing their society to our society in the United States. It shows that even though we come from two different places from across the globe, similar problems still do exist in both places. There is still human inequality that exists in our world, that many people are still fighting endlessly. It really brings into perspective that even though we all may dress differently, eat different foods, and listen to different things, we're all a lot more the same than we think we may be.
